With shared SSL you get the benefits of SSL without the costs that are usually associated with setting up an SSL on the server. if you use Shared SSL you use your web hosting company's SSL certificate. When using shared SSL, you usually get a secure URL like

It is not considered professional to use a shared SSL for conducting online transactions. Shared SSL is mostly useful if you want to use SSL when connecting with a mail client.
