Can I host a site designed in iWeb from a mac? |
|
This article contains information about creating and publishing a site using iWeb.
Yes! The new iWeb09 has the ability to publish your website to an FTP Server. Here is how to use this feature so that you don’t need a .mac account to host your iWeb site. If you have iWeb08 or earlier it’s not built into iWeb, but you can still do it. For more info on iWeb08 and earlier, Click Here.

You will need 4 things:
FIRST: You will need the your FTP Server hostname or address.
Usually, if your domain is pointing to the server already, your hostname is: ftp.yourdomain.com - If your website is ‘example.com’ then your hostname should be ftp.example.com – If you domain is not yet pointed to your hosting account server at midPhase, contact Technical Support and they will be able to give you a temporary FTP address you can use in the meantime.
SECOND: You will need your Username and Password. Your username and password should match your cPanel logins by default.
THIRD: You will need to know the path where your files will be stored on the server so they appear online.
For your primary domain, the path is ‘/public_html’without the quotes. For an Addon Domain on your account, you can get the path in your cPanel > Addon Domains

You will need to know all these things before you proceed. You cannot guess them. If you don’t know them please contact Technical Support Here.
Next, after you have made your website and you are ready to upload it to the server, Edit your website in iWeb Select your site Under ‘Site Publishing Settings’ Select ‘FTP Server’
Under ‘Site Publishing Settings’: Publish to: FTP Server Site Name: Anything you would like. Contact email: Your email address
Next, the second sets of settings are important:
Server Address: Your FTP hostname (e.g. ftp.example.com) User name: Your account username. Password: Your account password. Directory/Path: For your primary domain, using your cPanel logins for FTP, the correct path is ‘/public_html’ without quotes. For an Addon Domain, it will probably be ‘/public_html/addondomain.com’ Protocol: FTP Port: 21
Fill them all in and press Test Connection. If the connection works, you can try to upload your site. If your new site does not appear, it is likely you entered the Directory/Path incorrectly and your files were uploaded into the wrong place. You can check to be sure your site in the correct path using cPanel > File Manager or your own FTP Client.
